Re-Sightings 1989

This projection installation was specifically made for the context of Athens. The work uses two series of images projected anamorphically and overlapping each other. One series shows details from the Parthenon Marbles held by the British Museum in London. The counterpart series are framed gazes taken from portraits of a man, a woman and a child which intersect with the displaced frieze fragments. This work in returning images of the removed fragments of Parthenon frieze to Athens asks both ‘What is the cultural value of the displaced ‘artefact' in configurations of cultural identity?' and also ‘What might be the value of the replaced ‘image' as as a symbol of cultural identity, for both Greece and Britain?
