Elements 2010

‘Elements' considers the zone of Shifting Terrains as a shifting dynamic of energy production and consumption both organic and synthetic. The work assembles a range of ambient sounds of  co-existing presences: the local military firing range; the  power station; nesting birds on the local nature reserve; the nearby airfield which drift in and out of hearing. In the background, images of a lake, workers repairing electricity pylons, a warning flag come and go without narrative development. Optical and aural clarity is rendered fallible and differing temporalities co-exist.

The installation assembles sound and image in the gallery positioning the visitor such that sound is projected into the ‘foreground' and image into the ‘background' mobilising shifting registers of proximity and distance, suspension and dispersal.
